A mosque caretaker was tasked to ensure that the mosque's ablution pool was not used as a public bathing area. Fancy patronising a shop selling shadows to customers? A young boy, excited to travel to Ipoh for a Quran recital contest in 1965 had to find out the truth why his journey had to be cancelled. A religious leader stand accused of printing counterfeit notes by the young British officer. These stories and others, written by a former television director illuminate fundamental issues concerning the life of a Muslim: regarding faith, God and worship.

 

About The Author:

Jamal Ismail, a writer and producer with 40 years experience in the industry, has explored many genres, including theatre, radio and TV scripts, poetry, essays, short stories and novels. Born in 1952, Jamal worked as a director and producer for Malay Drama Unit at Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) before spreading his wings as an Executive Producer at ASTRO, Malaysia. He clinched many awards, including Loheh-Nur Award for Best Islamic Documentary for “Tamadun Islam” (1997) from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Literary Prize for short story “Yang” (1978), Literary Prize (consolation) for short stories “Di Sebalik Fatamorgana” (1983) and “Hikayat Hang Kulup” (1983) as well as National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) Book Award (Commendation) for novel Songsang (1986). He has published one novel, Songsang (1984) and three short story collections, namely Yang (1982), Yang Kekucingan (2016) and GOD(A) (2018).
